A look across the storytelling landscape, including outlets to watch:

  • We’re seeing many media companies like Mic, ATTN and Vice lay off staff as a part of a “pivot to media,” but if a media outlet isn’t making food focused videos, it looks like the pivot may not be worth the effort. Additionally, sites should remain agile to the types of videos followers are enjoying, such as quick cooking hacks or food porn shots.
  • Into, Grindr’s digital magazine for the modern queer world, is making a name for itself with entertainment, style, politics, travel stories and more. Halo Top Ice Cream and FX are backing the outlet as advertisers.
  • The Daily Mail is working on an upcoming show, DailyMail TV, and with Jesse Palmer serving as host, DailyMail TV is one to an outlet to watch out for.
  • Cheddar, the digital financial news startup, recently announced it will begin airing segments during newscasts on KXTV in Sacramento, CA along with seven TV stations in the News 12 local news network. Why is Cheddar doing this?
    • “The combined average viewership of the evening newscasts for the four major broadcasters — ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox — exceeded 20 million.”
    • “That 20 million is smaller than the total audience platform behemoths like Twitter and Facebook offer, but those services also count their viewers differently from broadcasters and can put video in front of their users whether those users want to see it or not.”
    • “And on those digital platforms, startups like Cheddar have to compete for views not just with broadcasting goliaths like CNN but entertainment and lifestyle content as well.”
    • “It’s the opposite in local broadcasting.”
  • Snapchat Discover is a growing hot spot for news coverage.
    • BuzzFeed’s Tasty and Nifty are joining Snapchat Discover starting in early September.
    • CNN launched a show exclusively available on  Snapchat called The Update. The Update highlights the top news stories of the day at 6pm EST along with breaking news throughtout the day. The show incorporates videos and stories from CNN staff around the world. via Cision and Mashable
    • NBC News also debuted a Snapchat-exclusive show called Stay Tuned. The how is co-hosted by NBC correspondents Savannah Sellers and Gadi Schwartz with newscasts posting twice a day each weekday and only once a day on Saturday and Sunday. “It has earned more than 29 million unique viewers in a month,” and “more than 40 percent of viewers tune in at least three days a week. More than 60 percent of the Stay Tuned audience is under the age of 25.”
  • After a couple of years of delay, travel website WONDERLUSTtravel.com launched this week with sponsorship by American Express Platinum.
